He gets the sense his counterpart is not handling the challenges of their family well and maybe a month ago, he would have told him to stop trying then. But instead there is a swell of empathy. There'd been a time when he was sure he wasn't doing everything he could. He still feels that way, but they love him and he loves them and that almost makes up for the shortfalls. ]

It isn't. But they love you anyway.
