He was running for mayor before he and Martha Wayne were killed. ( with ten year old bruce there, of course. ) I'm led to believe Carmine Falcone had something to do with it.

[ That makes sense. Falcone had been an influential presence in Gotham in his early years. If he couldn't control Thomas, getting rid of him was probably the only alternative. ]

[ He doesn't need to explain. Bruce understands. He could never stop being Batman. Having the others just made the weight of it bearable. Maybe if he had that same singular moment with Selina that this Bruce had in his early years, he would have gone with her.
