ABOUT
When Bruce Wayne was 8 years old, he watched a man named Joe Chill gun down his parents in cold blood. Up until that pivotal moment, he'd been a rather ordinary boy – despite having been born with a silver spoon in each fist. What no one in Bruce's life at that time could have predicted was the trajectory those two fatal bullets put Bruce on. In so many ways, he never truly left that alleyway. Thomas and Martha Wayne were not the only people who died that night. Whomever Bruce might have become did too and he used the trauma born there to craft the man he'd become in his adulthood.
Of course the richest man this side of the solar system would be self absorbed, irresponsible, and maybe just a little bit of an airhead. Of course. He's got expensive tastes and a fleet of luxury cars to reflect that. His life tends to move fast and so do the women he rotates in and out of it. He likes to party and have a good time and maybe sometimes throw that fortune around a little. But he isn't completely wasteful.
Despite crashing more than one of those fancy cars, Bruce does reflect some of his parents values. Namely their generosity in how he uses the bulk of his cash for the betterment of Gotham herself. He donates to all manner of charitable causes and tries to ensure the poor and disenfranchised are not forgotten or lost in the shuffle. He wants good things for people and tries to make that happen as best he can.
So if you ever met Bruce, you wouldn't think he'd ever be someone like Batman and that's the whole point.
Because Bruce Wayne, the playboy, the irresponsible airhead is an act. A mask to disguise the man he truly is underneath: Driven, determined, intense. The Batman. He's experienced first hand what human cruelty can do to a person. He's seen the lengths people are willing to go to get what they want. He meets all of this head on with a near indomitable will. Knock him down, knock him out, watch him get back up and keep fighting. As long as he's still alive, there's a chance to stop someone from suffering the same way he's suffered. And he will keep fighting.
Despite seeing the worst humanity has to offer, Bruce refuses to kill any of his rogues – even the most depraved of them. His no kill code is not solely because of Thomas, but he did have a hand in shaping it. He once said to Bruce: we don't know how a life will be lived. We don't know its value and its something that's still affects Bruce deeply. He can't see the future. He can't know what someone might do tomorrow, even if they've done something heinous today. It can come at great personal loss and suffering to himself, but he's willing to live with those consequences and with the guilt.
Despite how brutal Bruce can be, he is still a compassionate man who cares deeply about other people. Because what kind of man would put his own life on the line for others night after night if he did not care? He has a habit of adopting orphans and training them to be his Robin. So much so, Barbara remarks on it. He's not the best at showing it, but he loves the people he's allowed to be close to him, considers them his family and thinks they are the best part of him.
